Housing Program
"Francis, repair my house which you see is falling into ruins"
There is probably no greater help one can give a family in need than to build or repair a house.
Many of our families live in thatched huts and are in need of permanent housing; many families too have houses in need of repair due to the seasonal onslaught of the monsoons leaving them standing in pools of water due to cracks in their structures or holes in their roofs.

Providing a house for a needy family is about as tangible as one can get in terms of gift giving. There is a physical and psychological change in the family themselves. Where once there was an expressionless facial look, now there is a smile of thankful appreciation. House ownship is the closet icon of redemption from poverty that a family can have.
There are several ways to participate in this program:
- Build a new house at full cost for $4250. The house, especially built to prevent tsunami damage, will consist of a living room, bedroom, kitchen, verandah and toilet and bathing facilities;
- Many families qualify for government construction loans totaling circa $1700. If such is available, the savings to the sponsor is significant as the donation would be $2600.
- For families who already have housing, house repairs average anywhere from $350 to $500 in repair costs.
Inasmuch as each family is different costs can vary. Detailed concerning a specific family need can be had by contacting Sister Daphne Anto at ffaalleppey@gmail.com.
One is reminded of the importance of housing when recalling Saint Francis’ original calling.
Kneeling before the crucifix in a damaged church he heard the voice of Jesus commanding him “Francis, repair my house which you see is falling into ruins.”
