Monsoon Relief Fund

If there is anything which is both a positive and a negative it is the monsoons. They are the heavy rains which come in May and October. The strongest and longest being the May monsoons which run to about September. The rains are so heavy and the winds so strong that it comes down vertically vertical at times. The heavy winds destroy much in their path causing sea erosion of the shoreline and collapsing huts. But it also stirs the waters bringing in the fish and cooling temperatures.

The damage caused by the monsoons can be immense. The poor have no insurance companies on which to depend to replace what is lost. Repairs for a house can run anywhere between $200 and $500 depending on the damage. Any amount is too large for the poor who can not afford the repairs leading to many families living in a leaky or muddied hut during the monsoons.

Sister Rita Peter writes, "During our visits we come across many dilapidated and leaking houses, the repairing works of the same is beyond the reach of the poverty stricken families like them. Often we are forced to be reluctant towards them because of a lack of funds." The monsoon relief funds help these poor families to survive another year.
